The air filter is an important, but often an overlooked component of an air conditioner or HVAC system. It traps particles and contaminants that could badly affect air quality, such as dirt, dust, pollen, mould, bacteria and microorganisms – a nightmare should your facility face inspection from a major customer or health and safety professional. With regular use of the air conditioner, air filters can get clogged up and collect more particles, thus the need for cleaning or changing.

How often you should change your workplace’s air filter will depend on the following:

  • the kind of filter you have

As a general rule, you should clean your air conditioner’s air filter within an indoor area every two months. If the air conditioner is located in a more dusty or polluted place, cleaning your filters must be done monthly or more regularly.

Air conditioner or HVAC system filters should be checked and possibly be replaced every one to two months. If you have employees who suffer light to moderate allergies, the air filter should be changed more often. Factories, warehouses or industrial facilities who need cool air temperatures for the preparation and storage of foods may need to replace their air filters every month.

In order to remember when to change your air filter, you can set a reminder using your calendar app, such as Google Calendar. It is also best to consult with a professional HVAC or air conditioner cleaner to determine how often your air filter should be cleaned or changed. Having your air conditioner or HVAC system cleaned when it should be will ensure you aren’t playing with fire when it comes to health and safety.
